The Okra Picks are a dozen fresh titles chosen each season that SIBA Indie Bookstores want to handsell.  These books should be southern in nature but can cover any genre, not just fiction.  Southerners love their writers, and we want to be at the forefront of bringing them a strong selection of southern titles not to be missed each season.

SIBA has developed the Okra Picks program in response to feedback from its bookseller members who wanted the opportunity to promote current and upcoming southern titles.

The SIBA Book Awards are designed to give longer legs to books that have already been published.  SIBA’s Indie Stores and SIBA want to recognize those authors and thank them for the books that have added to the bottom line and to see those titles continue to grow in popularity and readership.

The Okra Picks are a whole new crop just hitting bookshelves that SIBA stores know their customers are going to love.  The first dozen Okra Picks will be for the fall and will be displayed at the SIBA Trade Show in Greenville, SC, for the first time. 

A new harvest of Okra picks will be announced each publishing season.  To nominate a book to be an Okra Pick send your nomination to:  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The first nomination period is between now and September 1. SIBA will be soliciting publishers for galley offers and “advanced access” requests which it will then forward on to SIBA bookstores. 

Once the Okra Picks are chosen, SIBA will be actively promoting these titles to both consumers and booksellers.  There will be The Okra Picks Patch at www.authorsroundthesouth.com.  Lady Banks will introduce The Okra Picks to over 5000 consumer subscribers in the September issue.  SIBA will post at www.sibaweb.com publisher-provided marketing materials on The Okra Picks toolkit for booksellers as well as SIBA-designed materials to promote The Okra Picks.

In a flash of Obama-induced inspiration, Wanda created her own Free Book Stimulus Plan.

Books can be purchased anywhere. So why shop at indie bookstores? Because buying a book at your local indie bookstore doesn’t just stimulate your reading, it stimulates your local economy. Shopping local is an investment in your own neighborhood and good karma all around. And because you can get a free book!

SIBA Trade Show 2009 - Greenville, SC, Carolina First Center - September 25 - 27

 
The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance invites exhibiting publishers to submit authors in consideration for special events to be held on Friday through Sunday, September 25-27, 2009. These programs will be held at the SIBA Trade Show in Greenville, SC.  SIBA tries to balance speakers by having authors of contemporary fiction, nonfiction, biographic and childrens content as well as celebrity authors. Suggested authors will also be considered as speakers for panels and readings and other events. An administrative fee of $100 will be charged for each confirmed author at the SIBA Trade Show. Southern Traveling Authors Registration Service(Columbia, SC) --Over 200 Southern authors and independent Southern bookstores have come together with the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA) to launch STARS—The Southern Traveling Authors Registration Service—a new resource for finding authors and literary speakers.  Designed to bring readers and writers together at community bookstores and events all over the south, the STARS directory lists Southern authors available for events and speaking engagements, interested in talking to schools, book clubs, and any other gathering of people who love to read.

Are you in charge of getting speakers for your Rotary Club?  Do you work in a library or school?  Does your book club daydream about meeting authors?  Are you in charge of a conference?  Do you run a daycare or adult care?  Do you need to put together fundraisers?   The STARS directory has the answer.  Simply visit www.authorsroundthesouth.com and take a look around and when you find an author of interest, click on the request this author link.  Your request will be directed to the author and your local bookstore will assist in making arrangements for your event.
